What Is Trauma-Informed Therapy?

As a therapist and healer, I witness firsthand the profound impact of Trauma on the lives of people. The lasting effects of Trauma can be due to a single event or repeated experiences of abuse, neglect, or loss. Traumatic experiences can leave lasting scars on our emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

Many individuals carry the weight of past negative experiences; this is a reason for trauma-informed therapy. There is hope for healing, and you are not alone.

What is Trauma-Informed Therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach that acknowledges the reality and impact of Trauma on a person's life. Unlike traditional therapy, which may focus more on addressing symptoms, trauma-informed therapy recognizes the underlying cause of those symptoms and creates a safe, supportive space for healing.

How Does Trauma Affect Us?

Trauma can disrupt our sense of safety and security in the world. It can affect how we view ourselves, relate to others, and manage our emotions.

After experiencing traumatic events, it is common for people to have experiences of:

Emotional dysregulation: Difficulty managing emotions such as anger, sadness, or anxiety.

Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts: Vivid reminders of the traumatic event.

Avoiding: People, places, or situations that trigger memories of or remind a person of the Trauma.

Hypervigilance: Feeling constantly on edge and scanning their environment for perceived danger.

Physical symptoms: Headaches, stomach aches, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating.

It's important to understand that this is not an exhaustive list; everyone experiences Trauma differently.

How Can Trauma-Informed Therapy Help?

Trauma-informed therapy fosters a safe and collaborative relationship between you and the therapist. As a therapist, I will work with you to:

Develop coping skills: Learn healthy ways to manage emotional distress and triggers.

Process traumatic memories: Explore the impact of your experience of Trauma in a safe and supportive environment. Work with you to help understand how your experiences have impacted your life in obvious and subtle ways.

Rebuild self-esteem and self-compassion: Learn to accept and forgive yourself, fostering self-worth and resilience.

Develop healthy relationships: Learn how to (re) build and maintain healthy relationships with others.

Taking the First Step Towards Healing

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above or suspect your past experiences negatively affect your present, reaching out for help is a brave and crucial step. Trauma-informed therapy can empower you to heal and navigate a healthier, happier life.

Your Trauma does not define you. You have the strength to move forward, and I support you on your path toward healing and wholeness.
